NY Governor Proposes Increased Insurance Surcharge

New York Governor Eliot Spitzer wants to pay for a proposed "Revitalization Fund," a fund that will be used for economic development in upstate New York, by increasing the auto insurance policy surcharge already being charged.

Currently, policyholders in the state of New York pay a $5 surcharge on every auto insurance policy, which is then turned over to the state government. Spitzer's new budget plan for the Empire State calls for a $15 increase making the total surcharge $20.

While an extra fifteen dollars from each person who holds an auto insurance policy in the state may seem inconsequential, the increased revenue is expected to generate roughly $140 million. It's also just one of many new fees and taxes the Governor has proposed in his effort to resolve a $4.4 billion deficit in the state budget proposal.
